Fabric types and more

Seersucker is a thin, puckered, usually cotton fabric, used to make clothing for hot weather. Seersucker is woven in such a way that some threads bunch together, giving the fabric a wrinkled or puckered appearance. The unevenness causes the fabric to be mostly held away from the skin rather than being plastered on it when wet with sweat, facilitating heat dissipation and air circulation. It also means that ironing is not necessary.

Hakoba is a type of embroidery work that involves creating a series of small holes or eyelets in the fabric and then filling them in with thread. This creates a lacy appearance and adds a touch of elegance to the garment which are usually soft summer cottons.

Georgette fabric is made out of a strong and plain weave. It has tear-resistant and lightweight properties. Clothes made from georgette have a semi-sheer and flowy look along with a gritty feel. It is believed that chiffon served as inspiration for creating the georgette fabric. However, georgette in contrast has better strength and is more long-lasting.

Batik means 'wax writing'. It is a way of decorating cloth by covering a part of it with a coat of wax and then resist dyeing the cloth to achieve unique and colorful designs on it.

Chikan work (or Chikankari) is delicate, fine Indian shadow type of embroidery work done in cotton threads on plain cloth.

A brief about Rida

For Dawoodi Bohra women, Rida has become a trademark Bohra garment the like of which is not found anywhere else in the Muslim world. A dizzying variety of colour and fancy patterns and prints are used. Exclusive embroidery, beautiful lacing, crochet, digitally printed or hand made patchwork and applique is found on every piece. The rida fulfils the Islamic requirement for limiting the exposure of the woman's figure whilst remaining pleasing to the eye.

There has been no change in the original cut due to religious significance but it has evolved in a lot of different ways to fit the modern lifestyle of any Bohra teenage girl to any working women of the community. Bohra women themselves are involved in the dealings of fabric, design, stitching and the trade has been going on since years evolving into home-run boutiques. Lot of improvements has been done to Rida as per the changing times. It has evolved in a great way in terms of design and also convenience of the wearer.

Over the years, women wishing to follow religious customs, while still maintaining their individuality, took to new looks to suit their tastes. Subtle changes started being made to the Rida, such as adding more bright colours, incorporating machine/hand embroidery, crochet, digital prints and hand painting. Fabric wise there has been a shift towards more of cotton material, including daily wash n wear casuals. Bohra Rida Designs are the ultimate form of self expressionism for the bohra women. The designs truly reflect the personality and the social environment from which you come. The type of colors you wear, the designs you pick can easily define who you are (to a fair extent). Sure the elegant flowers and baskets remain eternal as they always will be, but a lot of teenage girls come up with ideas such as abstracts, umbrellas, landscapes, bicycles, non-florals, geometrical designs and all sorts of appliques and prints.

Indeed a thriving mini industry has grown as women of the community have turned the rida into a fashion icon for the community. Ridas are now made to cater for every need of the Bohra ladies. They are designed to be worn at work, for going out, special occasions, religious remembrances or just the casual day to day hustle and bustle of the modern Bohra lady. And there are ridas for Haj, Karbala, Umrah and Ohbat too.

Ridas and Joris (RCJ) range from the regular and simple pannelled to the lavishly decorated, embroidered enchanting florals, and bridal-like designs. Several Muslim designers in India are introducing some modern trends to this traditional Muslim clothing which is making it more popular among youngsters. In addition to that the manufacturers are also working hard to bring out the same clothing style with new and more appealing inclinations into the fashion.
